Duff McKagan on Carrie Underwood Outselling Motley Crue
Country superstar Carrie Underwood is making headlines all over the world for outselling Mötley Crüe and their 1985 classic "Home Sweet Home." According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carrie's version has sold 211,000 digital copies to the Crüe's 181,000. None of this surprises McKagan, who chalks some of Carrie's success up to the power of television and the popularity of country music. Underwood's "Home Sweet Home" is featured each week on 'American Idol,' one of the highest rated shows on television.
"We've been careful with the Guns n' Roses catalog and the Velvet Revolver catalog," McKagan explains, thoughtfully. "You know, "Slither" was used in a Victoria's Secret commercial and that's killer. The commercial was dark and sexy and that adds mystique to the song. In terms of Carrie Underwood... Mötley are smart guys. Nikki is a real smart business guy. They probably thought, "F*ck it, this is an old song of ours, let's make some money off of it."
