Otep Describes Pulling Out Hair For Latest Album
For nearly 10 years now, the mysterious frontwoman of Otep is still a figure of great intrigue. With the band's latest Victory release, 'Smash the Control Machine,' they entered the Billboard charts in the top 50 and have continued to pique their listeners' interests. The band produced the record with Ulrich Wild, who also produced the Dethklok album and has worked with Static-X. "We wrote [the album] and recorded at the same time," said Otep Shamaya, who is also the band's namesake.
"We've never done that before," she amitted. "We were going over everything with a fine-tooth comb and pulling our hair out, but enjoying the process the entire time."
With lyrics that are some of the most unnerving in Otep's songwriting history, she discusses some of the stories that inspired the songs on 'Smash the Control Machine.' "It's only through embracing these truths, these harsh realities, that we can actually do something good to stop them, you know?" We do.
