New Jersey Deathfest Day Three: Fairlawn Bred One Metalhead

IncantationDingbatz transformed into a slam metal church on Sunday. And like a post-prom party weekend, everyone wore a bleak hangover on their face. NJ Dots, Morbid Terror and Dysentery launched mosh parties early in the day.

"Yeah, we're a brand new band if you couldn't tell already," Disma vocalist Craig Pillard (ex-Incantation, Womb) said. The grim death metallers gave Dingbatz a break from all the slam bands that reignited the festival on day three with their chaotic late-'80s sound.

After Digested Flesh and Funerus, slam cover boys Waking the Cadaver pridefully took the stage. "You guys feeling that new s---?" vocalist Don Campan asked. After some applause, Campan thankfully noted, "New Jersey approved!" As most slam accomplishes, Waking the Cadaver had a roaring mosh pit that stretched to the bar at one point. The pit was more humorous than it was destructive and that's what made the weekend so much fun, because it was made for metallers who just want to have fun at shows again.


Acheron, on the other hand, cleared the mosh floor before Incantation settled up on stage.

"Anyone from Fairlawn?" Incantation vocalist John McEntee asked the crowd of mostly New Jerseyans, in reference to his hometown. There was absolute silence for a couple seconds, which was strange, considering at no other point in the weekend was there any quiet time at the venue. "Didn't think so," McEntee admitted. "It's always good to play a good show in Jersey, my homestate."

As bashful as the men in Incantation may be, the band still produces some of the world's classiest breakdowns -- making them a true nerd band, even if they are decimating christendom.

There were a couple bands this writer missed at New Jersey Deathfest because either they couldn't make it or because I took too long of a cigarette break in between bands (the soundproofing at Dingbatz is incredibly impressive). Here they are: Call the Paramedics, Aborted Existence, Inhuman Dissilency, Vomitus Rectum, Dripping, Phlegm and Mortal Decay.
