W.E.T. 'Accidentally Fell' Into Jeff Scott Soto's Lap
"The last thing I wanted after leaving Journey was to say to the world, 'This is the kind of album I would have made with them,'" singer Jeff Scott Soto says of his career post-Journey. "I've always emulated Queen. They never had any boundaries, no walls between them. I always wanted to be that kind of artist. It's great to be able to tap into so many different things and not be pigeonholed or stereotyped into one."Jeff Scott Soto may be best known for his work with Yngwie Malmsteen and Journey, but now there's another project to add to the list: W.E.T., which is comprised of Soto, Erik Martensson and Robert Sall.
The trio write all songs together, creating an interesting mix of melodic rock. The band's name comes from the trio's other main projects. Sall plays with Work of Art, Martensson is with Eclipse and Soto sings for Talisman. As much fun as Soto had creating songs for W.E.T., he admits it wasn't a planned project.
"It's one of those things that accidentally fell on all our laps," he said. "We're all three involved in different groups, three different individual things on the side. Now that this thing is coming out and being successful in its own right, there's a possibility we'll follow up the album with a tour."
Perhaps most rewarding for Soto is the fan reaction. The three members of W.E.T. didn't expect much reaction at all, but so far fans have been online, asking for shows and more.
"Originally, we just went into this thinking we would just make an album together, not really knowing or feeling anybody would really got into this," Soto admitted. "We didn't think anyone would care except maybe our die-hard fans from the three bands. It seems we're turning heads all over the place. There are people who have never heard of me or the other guys, and [they] are jumping into this thing. It's kinda cool!"
W.E.T.'s self-titled debut is available now via Frontiers Records.
