Chapin's brother, John Mittlestadt, was also shot. He has serious injuries. Police say a neighbor shot the brothers.
Chapin's live-in girlfriend reported hearing the alleged gunman, 45-year-old Aaron Louis Patterson, knock on the door, ask for a beer and inquire about a child. Moments later, gunfire erupted. Patterson barricaded himself in the home and a SWAT team responded. Patterson was eventually arrested.

After word of Chapin's death fled through the Virginia metal community, fans and fellow musicians took to the band's MySpace page to express grief and share memories.
Patterson is being held without bond on murder, malicious wounding and other gun charges.
