Carnal Forge Lose Sole Remaining Founding Member

If a band no longer contains any of the people who helped initially found it, is it still cool to use the same band name? It seems as though it is, now that Sweden's Carnal Forge consists of nary a single original member. The band plans to carry on as Carnal Forge, even after the recent departure of drummer Stefan Westerberg.

Westerberg was the only remaining founding member of the thrash-leaning death metal outfit, and his departure was revealed on Jan. 19. The band, in a statement, said that it was "sad to see him leave," but did "wish Stefan the best of luck in his future endeavors."

Replacing Westerberg in Carnal Forge, which haven't released new material since 2007's 'Testify for My Victims,' is ex-Grave kitman Chris Barkensjö. The band should have an album ready for release later this year.

In his own statement, Westerberg said that he was "really happy that I got this change! I have known these guys for many years and now I feel that the time is right for me to move on and join Headstone. The rehearsals have been going great. I have been in Carnal Forge 11 years now but like I said, it's time for me to move on! I am excited and very happy that I got this change to do this with Headstone."

It’s a good point..are they the same band? Should they change the name? I guess if the fans don’t mind it shouldn’t matter. I still think of Sepultura and Max Cavalera as the same beast but of course there’s only one remaining member left in the band and that’s the bass player. There may come a point when he moves on but Sepultura will carry on I’m sure just as they have without either Cavalera brother.

On a personal note, I play in a band so I’ll put myself in the hypothetical position of leaving my East Midlands rock/ metal quartet. I would definitely want the other lads to carry on without me under the same name. It’s very odd to think that songs I have written would be performed without me but that’s part of that bands back catalogue I suppose. The songs belong to the band and not the individual members. Unless your names Dave Mustaine you don’t take your songs with you.

…and I never mentioned the Sugarbabes once…damn.
