Abscess Drummer/Vocalist Was Weaned on Horror Movie Nights

Abscess drummer Chris Reifert -- who admitted he needs at least four to five cups of coffee to function in the morning -- has always been into horror movies, so it makes sense that his music often touches on the darker, gorier side of life. His interest in the darkest recesses of humanity was spawned in his formative years.
"Well, I've always been into this kind of stuff, ever since I can remember, since I was a kid, and it continues to this day," Reifert told Noisecreep. "We had a neighbor whose parents had a friend who would leave horror movie books on the table, and I was always fascinated by them. In our house, I was raised watching old classics like original 'Frankenstein' and 'Wolfman.' Before there were VCRs and DVDs, my dad would set up a Super 8 movie projector in the living room for 'movie night' and everything. I was raised on it in a way, and it bled over in the musical side as time marched on."
Funny Reifert should use say "bled" over into his music. Abscess are known for their bloodied lyrics and stomach-turning artwork. But Reifert doesn't fear the band crosses the line into obscenity. "It's all relative," the drummer said. "We have had songs and albums that go straight for the gross out or the classic horror feeling, which is good, too. It depends on the mode you are in as a person and with the band. It all falls under the same heading: horrific, awful stuff."
Abscess' latest maniacal masterpiece, 'Dawn of Inhumanity,' is out March 9.
