Brain Drill, 'Quantum Catastrophe' -- New Album

Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster once called Santa Cruz, California death metal band Brain Drill "one of the most musically over-the-top bands I have ever heard. They are truly raising the bar for technicality, velocity and overall extremity in death metal."

The band's third album, 'Quantum Catastrophe,' which comes out May 11, isn't likely to change his mind. The disc -- which features tracks like 'Beyond Bludgeoned,' 'Entity of Extinction' and 'Awaiting Imminent Destruction' -- was recorded at Castle Ultimate Studios in Oakland, Calif. with co-producer Zach Ohren (Suffocation, Decrepit Birth, All Shall Perish), who also engineered mastered the disc along with the band.

"The album was definitely a huge accomplishment in the chronicling of the Drill," said guitarist Steve Rathjen. "The musical dynamics and skill level of everyone in the band have improved much more than the previous album. The songs are more technical and musically diverse but are also well balanced and catchy."

Bassist Ivan Munguia wrote and performed guitar on the tracks 'Mercy to None' and 'Awaiting Imminent Destruction.'

The follow-up to 2008's 'Apocalyptic Feasting,' 'Quantum Catastrophe' will be an extreme concept album that involves black holes, galactic cosmic radiation, pandemic disease and zombie radiation. "Mankind is entering an age of mass speculation as foreseen by numerous ancient cultures," explained vocalist Steve Rathjen. "Space to all humanity still primarily remains a mystery even in our days of immense technological advancements. We know this void is filled with infinite extremities, which could occur at any instant, easily decimating all habitations. We also know our planet has fulfilled these mass extinctions time and again centuries in the past. The question which remains, are we due for another apocalyptic transition?"

Brain Drill filmed a video for 'Beyond Bludgeoned' in February in the San Joaquin Delta/Rio Vista, Calif. area. The clip was directed by Nikko DeLuna and shot by Justin Potter. Like 'Apocalyptic Feasting,' the new disc will feature grisly cover art by Par Olofsson.
