Hellbastard Could Live Two Months on $100

Slayer is one of the most recognizable names in all of heavy metal. On Oct. 8, Slayer played Long Island's Nassau Coliseum with Megadeth and Anthrax. Just over 20 miles away, at a venue more known for it's dance parties than metal shows, Slayer was the topic of the night, as Mutant Supremacy and Hellbastard slayed at Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Europa.

"I want to thank each and every one of you for not paying $60 to see Slayer and coming here instead," Mutant Supremacy vocalist Sam Awry said to fans. Still fairly new to the New York metal scene (in comparision to the New York death metal pioneers at least), Mutant Supremacy play with an old-school spirit. The don't feel they are owed anything. They just want to shred, scream and go off.

When crusty thrashers Hellbastard reached the stage, they had a similar sentiment. With less than a half hour to play a set, frontman M.S. "Scruff" Lewty and team kept what Bad Brains would call PMA -- a positive mental attitude. After the crust metal punk show, Europa transformed to a dance club mecca, making the set's curfew 10:30 PM. It was about 10:10 PM when Scruff started talking.

Somehow Slayer found their way back into the show; $60 for a ticket, $40 for a shirt. "You could live off of $100 for two months," Scruff exclaimed. Even though his math might not add up for the average American, he had a point.

Be sure to pick up Mutant Supremacy's debut full length 'Infinite Suffering.' It is also available on LP. Hellbastard will be reissuing 'Heading for Internal Darkness' on CD in early 2011, but the LP is available in clear vinyl.
