Noisecreep is sad to report that former Manowar drummer Scott Columbus passed away on Monday, April 4th, at the age of 54. No further details are available at press time.
Columbus joined the power metal pioneers in 1982 after Manowar's previous drummer, Donnie Hamzik, couldn't handle the touring life. From 1983's landmark 'Into Glory Ride' through 1988's 'Kings of Metal' albums, Columbus sat on the group's drum throne. After touring in support of the latter record, Columbus left Manowar in 1990.
Columbus laid low for the next few years, but eventually rejoined Manowar in 1993 and stayed in the lineup till 2008.
On April 5, 2011, Manowar's official website posted the following:
"With great sorrow we announce the passing of our brother Scott Columbus. A rare talent, equally a rare individual, a father, a friend, and a brother of metal. All of the great moments we spent together are burnished in our hearts and memories forever. We know he is in a good place and at peace. He will never be forgotten. Your family and brothers, Joey, Eric, Karl, Donnie."
