Def Leppard Guitarist Vivian Campbell Modest About Work With Dio

Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell's early music career can be traced all the way back to Ronnie James Dio. Campbell was the late, great Dio's original axeman, appearing on such landmark platters as 'Holy Diver.' Campbell joined Def Leppard in 1992 just in time for 'Adrenalize,' but doesn't think that most Leppard fans know about his connection to Dio.
"Most Def Leppard fans don't equate me with Dio, and might not be aware of that connection," Campbell recently told Noisecreep. "But I still have rabid guitar fans who remember me from those days. I am proud of the work that I did [with Dio] and the way I played. I wasn't pleased with it at the time, but that's the benefit of hindsight, right?"
It's refreshing to see a rock legend like Campbell be so modest about his past.
Campbell also weighed in on 'Dreaming With Def Leppard,' the album of Leppard classics re-imagined as children's lullabies. Campbell played guitar on three songs on the album. "It's a pretty trippy, interesting thing," the guitarist said. "We've done acoustic songs, but some of these songs were never meant to be played on acoustic guitar. When you do it, you gotta lay it down differently and be less bombastic and more rhythmic, because that's how the acoustic guitar is. It was interesting hear the whole personality of the song change with a whole different arrangement."
Def Leppard will be on tour from June through August with classic rockers Heart.
