Lightfighter Reimagine Skrillex's 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites' -- Song Premiere
The Syndicate
Lightfighter is a young quartet hailing from the central valley of California. The band formed from the ashes of Hello Astronaut and A Midsky Surrender, a post-hardcore unit whose screaming cover of Soulja Boy's 'Kiss Me Thru the Phone' became a huge viral hit. Lightfighter play what the group call "metal-step," which blends dubstep programming, screamo melodies and the crunch of metal-core.
The group first offering is a remix of Skrillex's staple 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.' The Lighfighter version not only remixes sections of the original song, but also adds live instruments, vocals and new melodies. Bassist-vocalist Ben Ezaki says of the song, "In dubstep there's usually a drop and breakdown but we moved the song around to make it a verse/chorus structure. Skrillex is definitely one of the most popular dubstep DJs in the US. While most other dubstep DJs wouldn't understand our vision of the genre, Skrillex's background in hardcore is similar to ours [he used to be the vocalist in screamo band From First to Last under the name Sonny Moore] and hopefully he'll appreciate our version of his song."
Noisecreep has the exclusive premiere of Lightfighter's reimagining of 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites' under the cut.
Speaking on the mash-ups of genres, vocalist-guitarist-programmer Colin Holbrook says, "I feel like the mainstream side of heavy music is parched now and what was original ten years ago is now standard. Dubstep is the more experimental side of house music and when it's playing you can't help but nod your head to it. So we thought why not blend it with our heavy music roots."
Lightfighter have recorded an EP with producer/engineer Jordan Palmer which they intend to release next month.
