When Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich and Lou Reed spoke to the Guardian about their collaborative album 'Lulu,' they spoke in superlatives, with Reed proclaiming that the album "has so much rage that it's thrilling." Reed's bold proclamation certainly revs the engine of excitement for the Loutallica album, out Nov. 1.
Reed also said, "I've waited for a long time to have a shot at doing something like this with the right people. I'm energized and jacked up. Sometimes I find it so emotional I have to get up and turn it off." Yeah, well, working with Ulrich and James Hetfield and co. has that effect on people,
even rock legends like Reed himself.
But 'Tallica were equally enamored by their new partner in crime. Ulrich said, "Lou walked into the studio and about seven seconds later my head was spinning like Linda Blair in 'The Exorcist.' It was so impulsive it'll take me years to access what happened."
While some fans have been critical of how disjointed the single 'The View' sounds, co-producer Hal Willner addressed those concerns, saying, "The music is demanding on the listener, no question. I don't know what to call it but it is not background music. Lou came in with material, Metallica brought the ticket and took the ride."
Ulrich addressed the band's role as somewhat of a backing band on 'Lulu,' something he personally relished. He said, "I didn't know we were going to be so involved on a creative level. I was perfectly happy in a perverse way to be a backing band, because that's something we've never done."
