'Metal Evolution': Sneak Peek of 'Progressive Metal' Episode (VIDEO)
VH1 Classic
Episode 10 of Vh1's 'Metal Evolution' series focuses on progressive metal, and in our exclusive sneak peek, founding King Crimson drummer Michael Giles talks about whether he and his band of sonic adventurers were dark enough to qualify as metal.
"Some of it does sound evil," Giles says. "Musically, we wanted to do something different, to play music we'd never heard before."
"The dark side is always more attractive, isn't it?" he adds.
Dubbed "proto-thrash" by Jerry Ewing, editor of Classic Rock magazine, King Crimson clearly had a big impact on Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, who greatly admired their guitar heroics.
"A lot of the chords they used were chords you weren't really hearing back then," he says. "They really went out on a limb."
Tune in this Saturday night at 10:00PM ET to VH1 Classic to watch the rest of the episode.
