Bobby Durango Dead: Rock City Angels Singer, Former Bandmate of Johnny Depp Dies

Bobby Durango, who sang for late-'80s glammy rock band Rock City Angels, has died. Details surrounding his passing were not immediately clear and the band asked that fans refrain from commenting on their theories about his death until his family makes an official announcement of some sort.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported the news of Durango's death and provided a rundown of the RCAs up and down music biz history. The band's humble beginnings can be traced to South Florida. They headed to Los Angeles to seek bigger and better things. The band's membership was somewhat revolving door, with Johnny Depp once in the lineup before catching his break on the small screen as the male lead in '21 Jump Street.'

The band was eventually signed to New Renaissance and saw major label Geffen purchase that contract. The label scrapped the debut material the band was working on and sent them to Memphis to start again. That's when they recorded 1998's Young Man's Blues. The album didn't take off and the band was eventually dropped from the roster. The band remained active as of late, working on a new album, dubbed Devils in the Countryside. The Angels were hoping to have it out sometime this year, too.

The band posted a Facebook message from collective members, past and present, sharing the news of Durango's death with fans. The entire text of their post is as follows:

"The Rock City Angels are no stranger to rumors. There is no shortage of outlandish tales attributed to the band that, while entertaining and bizarre, are just patently untrue. We wish we could tell you all that the most recent story circling around was just another fabrication ... another rock n' roll tall tale. We can't. Yesterday we received the shocking news that our founder, singer and beloved brother Bobby Durango passed away.

Whether you knew Bobby in the flesh, only knew him online or just listened to his music, all of our lives are emptier today without him. And as for those rumors we talked about earlier, even we don't know all of the details yet, so out of respect for his family it would be greatly appreciated if we could all refrain from posting any personal theories about the circumstances and instead celebrate the man's life. He certainly left us an amazing soundtrack.
