Five Albums That Changed My Life: Luke Johnson of Lostprophets
To help celebrate Weapons, Lostprophets will be heading out on this year's installment of the Warped Tour. The album marks the debut of drummer Luke Johnson, who joined the group in 2009. Noisecreep asked Johnson to take part in our ongoing 'Five Albums That Changed My Life' series. Checking out the dude's picks, we were inspired to bust out some classic records from the '90s!
Gish, Smashing Pumpkins (1991)
"This album blew my mind. I was about 14 when I first heard it - I borrowed the CD from a friend. The opening beat on 'I Am One' took my head off! Straight away I had to go and figure out how to play it on drums, and shortly after mastering that, I learned the whole record. Further down their line, I figured out how to play all their records, up to and including 'Adore', but this was the one that got me started. They are probably my favorite band of all time, alongside Jane's Addiction."
Ritual de lo Habitual, Jane's Addiction (1990)
"I was into Jane's Addiction from a young age. They were brought into my life through my dad, because a band he managed called The Wonder Stuff had toured with them. I had Triple X and Nothing's Shocking - my first ever band covered 'Mountain Song' and 'Idiots Rule' at our early gigs. A while later, a good friend played me '3 Days' (from Ritual) - I was about 18 at the time - and it blew my mind. I bought the album the next day. I think this album is one of the best driving records ever. I constantly go back to it; it never leaves my iPod."
Give 'Em Enough Rope, The Clash (1978)
"My Clash love began with 'Combat Rock'. My dad used to play it a lot in the house when I was a kid. Obviously I loved 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' and 'Rock the Casbah' and then of course 'London Calling', but it wasn't until I was about 20 that I rediscovered the Clash in a different light. A former bandmate suggested we cover 'Safe European Home', which then led to me buying 'Give 'em Enough Rope'. I got knocked on my arse. 'Stay Free', 'Tommy Gun', this album was literally non-stop, blow after blow hits! This band really represents the main punk side of me. Well, them and Joy Division."
Substance, Joy Division (1988)
"Yet another band I have my father to thank for introducing me to. Again, as a child, I heard the sounds of Joy Division around the house and in the car, mainly because my father was involved in promoting a couple of New Order shows, but he was also a huge fan of the band. Substance always stuck out. 'Dead Souls' in particular is a song I can listen to on endless loop."
Hup, The Wonder Stuff (1989)
"The reason I play drums is because of this band. Everything musical in me was inspired by this band and nurtured by my parents. As I mentioned earlier, my father managed this band for 15 years. This album was their second album. It took the band to a new level. I think I listened to this record on repeat for an entire year. I spent that year going to loads of their shows and even soundchecking their drums."
