Mad Season Tap Mark Lanegan to Sing on Unfinished '90s Songs

Before Mad Season broke up in 1999, the Seattle supergroup began work on a collection of songs that was to follow their lone album, 1995's Above.

As Blabbermouth.net reports, those tunes will finally see the light of day, and a decade after the death of singer Layne Staley -- best known as the frontman for Alice in Chains -- guitarist Mike McCready has enlisted another Northwestern icon to sing on the unfinished songs: Mark Lanegan.

Lanegan, of course, made his name with Screaming Trees, as did Mad Season drummer Barrett Martin, who broke the news about this forthcoming music. Lanegan also guested on Above, contributing vocals and additional lyrics on "I'm Above" and "Long Gone Day."

While it's not yet known whether McCready, a member of a little band called Pearl Jam, plans to record solely with Lanegan or enlist multiple vocalists, the announcement comes as good news for fans of angsty '90s-era Seattle rock.

As McCready said several months ago, Mad Season also plans to rerelease Above, which went gold and spawned a couple of modern rock hits.
