Kyng Bassist Tony Castaneda: Five Albums That Changed My Life
Kyng has been promoting Trampled Sun, their 2011 debut album. Fans of Queens of the Stone Age, Thin Lizzy and Deliverance-era Corrosion of Conformity need to check this band out. You won't be let down.
Noisecreep asked Kyng bass ace Tony Castaneda to take part in our ongoing 'Five Albums That Changed My Life' series. Check out his list below and catch the band on tour next month!
Willy and the Poor Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)
"First off, what is amazing to me about this band is the fact that their sound is very Southern/swamp rock, yet they are from California. I cannot listen to them without being reminded of the bayou or anything Vietnam. My Uncle (Jorge Andrade) plays a huge roll in my discovery of rock 'n' roll, and we both have CCR to thank for it. I can recall as a young boy living in San Diego and driving to Los Angeles with my uncle, we would pop this album in the cassette player and literally sing along to every song on the album. It was then that I decided I wanted to make rock music a part of my life forever."
The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd (1973)
"Back when I was around 8-years-old, my father would take us to garage sales every weekend and one time he bought me a used boom box. I remember getting home and rummaging through our garage and looking for any cassette I could find so that I can put it use. Looking through an old box, I found one containing The Dark Side of the Moon. It had a sticker that read "Property of the San Diego Library." It belonged to an uncle of mine who checked it out. Needles to say, that cassette never made it back to the library.
...And Justice for All, Metallica (1988)
"The year was 1988. My cousin and I, who played a big roll in my discovery of heavy metal music, would hop on the bus and head over to the shopping mall to hang out. A stop at the record store was always a must. I vividly recall the day he called me upstairs to his room to show me his latest vinyl record he had bought. At the time, I had heard about Metallica but never really listened to any of their work. I remember him taking the record out of its case setting it onto his record player and dropping the needle onto the record. The first song I had heard was "One." The chills I got from hearing the war combat in the background was so creepy yet blissful! Since then, Metallica has played a major influence on my life as a musician. Enough said!"
Seasons in the Abyss, Slayer (1990)
"Back when I was 13-yrs-old, Manuel used to live in the housing projects of East L.A. and every weekend our family would drive to visit his family and he had this crazy and weird neighbor that they used to call "Slayer" because of his wardrobe. He wore nothing but Slayer shirts every day. It got to the point that I was so intrigued by the name, that I asked my cousin who they were and he handed me the Seasons in the Abyss album and said, "Here, take this home and listen to it, but make sure you bring it back!" I remember getting home and popping it into my boom box cassette player, pressing the rewind button (that's what you did in those days) and pressing play. What came out of those speakers changed my life forever!
Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath (1970)
"This Album Changed my life forever. Black Sabbath is one of those bands who is so timeless that no one will ever duplicate what they did to the music industry and fans alike. The song that made me decide to pick up the bass guitar and dedicate my life to locking myself in a room and learn every song I could, was "NIB." That bass line intro sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it! I thrive to be the best I can be as a musician, thanks to these guys but mainly, thanks to Geezer Butler. Whenever I write a bass line, I always think to myself, "What would Geezer Do?" Amen."
