Former Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton has died.

The British musician lost his battle with cancer yesterday (Dec. 6) at the age of 61.

Lloyd-Langton performed on and off with the space rockers starting in 1969 and played on 1970's "Hurry on Sundown," a song that has been covered many times throughout the years, including American indie-folk group Vetiver in 2008.

Although they weren't members of the band at the same time, Motörhead mastermind Lemmy Kilmister played bass in Hawkwind in the mid-'70s.

In a tribute to Lloyd-Langton on Hawkwind's official website, the band wrote: "Huw had been bravely fighting cancer for a couple of years, but was determined not to let the battle affect his day to day life.

"He continued to play his guitar, laugh, joke and share the great love he had in his heart, with all who knew him... Huw was one of the great guitarists with an individual style and character. He is gone but never forgotten by any of us. He will live on in our music and in our hearts."

Outside of his work with Hawkwind, Huw had his own band, the Lloyd Langton Group, played in '70s rockers Widowmaker and also did session work.

I can't believe Huw lost the battle. It's really sad, he was a great player.
