After Whitesnake drummer Brian Tichy broke his collarbone in a mountain bike accident on Dec. 31 --subsequently not being able to perform at their New Year's Eve concert -- he's announced his departure from the group.

In a post on the band's website, the statement reads, "Whitesnake regret to announce that powerhouse drummer, Brian Tichy, has told David Coverdale this morning he is leaving the band to pursue the SUN project he started with gifted singer/guitarist Sass Jordan. Bassist & singer, Michael Devin, also a participant in SUN, will remain with Whitesnake."

Coverdale added, "We are truly sad to see him go, but, we fully support the pursuit of his ambitions and sincerely wish him well. His fearless drumming brought a relentless driving edge and to our music that we fully embraced. Good luck, Brian...May the S.U.N. shine brightly on you."

Whitesnake is currently looking for a new drummer, but said their upcoming tour dates will not be affected by the change. They are scheduled to perform Jan. 24 at the Bonzo Bash NAMM Jamm.

In a tweet, Tichy said he's "getting better" after surgery and thanked fans for all their support.

The news comes just a day after Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano announced he was leaving the group.
