Fans of 'Batman' villains might do a double take if they see the cover of Taletellers' sophomore effort, 'Radicalized.' The German rockers hired legendary metal cover artist Mark Wilkinson to paint a Two-Face-esque figure for their latest album cover. "At first sight, the concept seems to be pretty simple: two-face, the classic good/bad concept," Taletellers guitarist and vocalist Alan Costa told Noisecreep recently. "But if you look closely you may ask yourself, 'What side of the face is really the good side, and which is the bad one?'"

Wilkinson, who also designed covers for Taletellers' previous releases, is well-known in the metal scene. The artist has done artwork for the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, and Europe, as well as newer bands like Funeral for a Friend and Bullet for My Valentine. Taletellers were more than excited to work with him again. "In our opinion he is one of the best, if not the best, cover artist in the history of rock music," Costa said. "We're really happy to have the opportunity to work with him and he once again did a phenomenal job!"
Melodic hardcore band Ironwill has encountered more than its share of misfortunes, especially for a band that's barely two years old. "Our first tour was plagued with unforeseen bad luck," drummer Aaron Bafford told Noisecreep recently. "Not only did two members get robbed at gunpoint, our tire blew out in Alabama, our guitarist was tazed while trying to break up a fight, and we drove for hours in the middle of the night with one window stuck rolled down."
"The title of the song is drawn from the 'Dark Tower' series by Stephen King," guitarist Seth Hecox recently told Noisecreep. "In the story, the main characters follow the Path of the Beam to the Dark Tower, which is the center of everything. The Dark Tower is at the axis of all possible universes and represents the eternal constant... that stays consistent through the infinity of possibilities that could possibly exist."
When we think of death personified, the Grim Reaper, dressed in black and wielding a harvester's scythe, is often the first thing that comes to mind. Polish death metal band Ulcer chose this classic imagery for the cover art for their new full-length 'Grant Us Death.' "What is more well-chosen than a sinister figure with a scythe striking our beautiful planet, when we hear a prayer-like supplication [like] 'Grant Us Death?'" Ulcer's Sonnelion told Noisecreep. "I know it's totally un-original, but I wanted the artwork to be just as traditional as the music the album contains."

After settling on an album title, Sonnelion and the band looked for an artist skilled at hand-drawing. The group wanted someone who knew what death metal is all about. "Bartlomiej Kurzok surely is that person," Sonnelion said. "He's a very talented guy, although he stays in the shadow, which is very careless of him, because he's got a great potential and it would be a pity to waste it."

Connecticut's Life in Your Way have just released details on 'Kingdoms', their first recording since their reunion. According to the group's Facebook page, the release will be available as three EPs, each with its own specific lyrical theme. "It's easily the heaviest material to date for us," guitarist James Allen told Noisecreep, about the material for one of the EPs. "Kids can also expect guest vocal appearances from a wide array of their favorite singers, at least one on each EP."

All three releases -- 'The Kingdom of Man,' 'The Kingdom of Darkness,' and 'The Kingdom of God' -- will be available for download for free from the band's new label, Come&Live!. The EPs release dates will be staggered, but all three will be compiled on a physical CD for sale on the first release date.
Portland, Ore.'s Across the Sun are a fortunate group. The band recently had the rare opportunity to release their very first full-length on Metal Blade, one of the highest-profile metal labels in the world. In addition to the pressure of producing an album's worth of standout metal was coming up with appropriately eye-catching album artwork. "[W]e knew the artwork for 'Before The Night Takes Us' needed to accurately encapsulate the [album's] theme without compromising our artistic vision," Across the Sun drummer and graphic designer Alan Ashcraft told Noisecreep recently.

The meaning behind the album's artwork "involves making peace with your demons, before becoming enveloped within the ruinous grasp they can harbor," Ashcraft said. "I wanted to personify this by placing a damaged, desperate man into a scene in which he is escaping the darkness, in pursuit of the light. I wanted to evoke thought and emotion by using warm and vivid tones to create a surreal and inviting horizon."
Ontario, Canada's Protest the Hero's third full-length probably had fans of the progressive metalcore band searching for a dictionary for the meaning of its title, 'Scurrilous.' Adding to the air of mystery is the work of art on the cover, created by the late grandfather of bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi, Jafar Petgar. "This piece appeared to him in a dream," Mirabdolbaghi recently told Noisecreep. "[The dream came] after a gossiping neighbor had created a rift between him and his wife based on conjecture and scurrilous lies -- hence the title of the piece, 'Scurrilous.' It depicts the whole natural world cowering from the untruths of the human tongue."

"We thought the wide and varied use of color in the piece reflected the contrasting sonic landscapes of the music on the album," Mirabdolbaghi explained. "[We thought] that our audience would appreciate the story behind the artwork."
Strictly-metal fans might not find much interest in the new solo album from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, 'Give the Drummer Some' -- until they see the cover art. Without seeing the signature near the bottom, the telltale skull and mummy wrappings are strong clues that this is indeed a genuine Pushead piece.

Pushead (real name: Brian Schroeder) got his start in the early 80's, creating covers for his hardcore punk outfit Septic Death and other similar bands. His corpus of work grew immensely over the next few decades as he put ink to paper for such bands as Metallica, Soundgarden, Prong, Corrossion of Conformity, and Queensryche. Arguably, his most high-profile work is his gray-and-green depiction of a crumbling, corrupted statue of Lady Justice on Metallica's '...And Justice for All', released in 1988.
Recently reunited Connecticut hardcore heros Life in Your Way have just announced the line-up for their forthcoming release, 'Kingdoms'. Most notable is the inclusion of Todd Mackey, former vocalist for With Honor, and drummer Andy Nelson from Wrench in the Works. Nelson has replaced John Gaskill behind the kit.

"We are sad to part ways with great drummer and friend, John Gaskill," the band said in a press release. "John wrote and recorded both 'Ignite and Rebuild' and 'Waking Giants'. John's relocation to his home in Virginia and several other logistical issues played into this difficult decision."
Noisecreep is proud to premiere Deadlock's 'Falling Skywards,' a track from the German band's fifth album, 'Bizarro World.' "No one is satisfied with his life - everybody is always looking for more," Deadlock bassist John Gahlert told Noisecreep, of the song's lyrics. "Humanity lives in his own world, builds his own tower to stand above all other species, equal to god - trying to reach an utopian perfection."

"It is a lyrical allegory which illustrates that mankind isn't the crown of creation - no matter how high we build or how hard we try."

Throughout the album, the band continues to develop their unusual but appealing take on metal. On its two previous efforts, Deadlock combined deep, guttural screams with pop-tinged vocals that soar above a bedrock of metalcore with elements of gothic and industrial music.

Killer Lyrics: Speak what you mean / Don't hold it back / The lies eat you away / The truth is killing you

Betrayal vocalist Brendan Foley went through what most young men in bands do: making the difficult choice of pursuing education or committing to a life of music. In fact, he found inspiration in this process, admitting, "I got the idea for 'Without a Doubt' while I was going to school last year with all the negative feedback I got from other students, teachers and friends about dropping out of school to pursue Betrayal full-time."

Luckily for fans of brutal metallic hardcore, Foley chose to throw all his eggs into the Southern California band's basket. And Foley found an outlet to speak of the struggles he faced with his decision.

Killer Lyrics: Strangers with familiar faces / Slowly lock their eyes on me / Is it the curse that drives them mad / Or am I the one suffering?

"The overall theme to 'Where Did They Hyde Dr. Jekyll?' is finding yourself," Jeremy Eslinger, bassist for Huntsville, Ala.'s Social Jet Lag, told Noisecreep. "The outside influence of the media, politics and even our peers starts to weigh on us and the truth we used to be so sure of is now becoming nothing but gray."

'Hyde' appears on the band's first full-length, 'The Monster Inside,' a mix of ferocious metalcore and clean pop melodies. Their style's dichotomy is encapsulated in the dueling vocals between Ben Enslinger and Melissa Germano.

Noisecreep last talked to Dave Quiggle when 'Atrocities' from Take It Back! was released. Now that metalcore giants and labelmates Overcome are releasing a new album after reuniting, Quiggle was the default designer for the artwork. "The title of the Overcome album is 'The Great Campaign of Sabotage,'" Quiggle told Noisecreep, "which is taken from a quote from C.S. Lewis."

Lewis is probably best known for his 'Narnia' series of books, but he is also highly-respected as a religious scholar and Christian thinker, which is the side of Lewis this quote comes from: "Enemy-occupied territory -- that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage."

Killer Lyrics: We're born and raised to die / There's no meaning to this life / Indebted to a God enslaved by time

"The lyrics were initially very inspired by the marching, mechanical rhythm of the opening riff," guitarist and vocalist Charles Elliot of Abysmal Dawn said to Noisecreep of their new song, 'In Service of Time.' "I could just visualize the gears of clocks churning and people slowly marching with their heads down like in some old silent film ('Metropolis' maybe?). That got me to thinking about my own mortality and time in general."

'Time' is off of the Los Angeles-based death metal band's third album, 'Leveling the Plane of Existence.' Elliot's aim for the lyrics was that "time is what rules over all and that if there is a God, that would be the one thing that entity would have to account for as well."
Lamont recruited Brooklyn-based artist Seldon Hunt for the artwork after seeing an image of his on the road. Finnish power metal pioneers Stratovarius rage on with their 13th album, 'Elysium.' We talked with the cover's designer, Gyula Havancsák, nearly two years ago when he did the artwork for Jungle Rot's 'What Horrors Await.'

If you're familiar with the covers of two recent Stratovarius releases, 'Polaris' and the 'Darkest Hours' EP, 'Elysium' will look strangely familiar -- both in its artistic style and subject matter. Havancsák created numerous designs with similar themes, the first one appearing on the 'Darkest Hours' release. "The second one [I created] shows the pre-creature as he reappears on the 'Elysium' cover," Havancsák told Noisecreep, "possibly on a state of the next phase in his life, which after all became the total opposite of the previous cover design."
