Something dark, cerebral, and dizzying is gathering power in the streets of Atlanta. Four hyper-talented musicians are working together to create the ultimate combination of memorable riffs, jaw-dropping beats, mild-altering vocal harmonies, and unearthly guitar passages. Yes, Mastodon are writing the follow-up to their 2009 masterpiece 'Crack the Skye.' Right now, even the band members don't know exactly where the songs are going musically, but they're happy with the direction in which they're headed.

"We've got a ProTools rig set up and [guitarist] Bill [Kelliher's] been learning how to use that," Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor recently told Noisecreep. "We're recording bits and pieces and stringing up three or four riffs together and testing them out. It's super-heavy and it sounds killer, so it doing what it's supposed to do. It's doing what every other Mastodon song has done for us. We really just try to play music that we dig and that's bad-ass. Our approach has always been exactly the same, and we've learned that we need to do it that way. Otherwise, it's just not right."

Between earth-rattling jam sessions, Dailor talked to Noisecreep about the band's creative process, the sonic vibe of the songs, the tentative concept for the record, and how his feelings about religion, mortality, and mythology are factoring into the music. Dailor also discussed Mastodon's recent experience scoring the movie 'Jonah Hexx,' as well as his predilection for Spongebob Squarepants.
It's hard to believe that in over 33 years, rock legends Def Leppard have never released an official live album. Instead, they've kept on plugging away through great times (the '80s), hard times ('the '90s) and pretty good times (the '00s). Through it all, they've toured non-stop, whether playing sold-out arenas or amusement parks.

This summer, after playing the Download Festival in England, Def Leppard will hit the road in North America with support from Heart starting June 15 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The band will be touring behind its first multi-disc live set, 'Mirrorball,' which will feature a batch of live songs, new studio recordings, and a full-length DVD.

"If this was vinyl, it would be a triple album," Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen said during a recent interview with Noisecreep. "It's 21 live tracks, three studio tracks, and then a DVD with five live tracks with a whole movie." We asked Collen to give us some more info about the release and the band's future plans.

"Every time I was in a situation where I was about to give up, Dee and I would randomly run into each other and he would talk me through it," Green recently told Noisecreep. "The interesting thing is, he was always [also] facing some sort of immense struggle when he and I would coincidentally bump into each other, and talking about it would be helpful to him as well."

Before Green worked on his first movie, 2000's 'Coffee & Donuts,' he was well on his way to breaking through in the music biz with his Salem, Massachusetts band Haddonfield. Noisecreep talked to Green about his past life as a rock band frontman, the use of metal in horror movies, his unusual relationship with Dee Snider, and how he really feels about Snider's movie 'Strangeland.'

The latest Deftones album, 'Diamond Eyes,' has been out for almost a year now and the band continues to support the album with one tour after another. More significantly, they're having a good time doing it. Any past drama involving personal issues, heavy drinking, or musical differences seems to be a thing of the past. Vocalist Chino Moreno in particular is busier and happier than he has been in years. Not only is he stoked about the upcoming 'Covers' album the band is releasing on Record Store Day (April 16th), but he's greatly enjoying Crosses, the side project he's working on with Far guitarist Shaun Lopez.

Moreno says he's looking forward to his next U.S. tour with Deftones, Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Butcherettes, which begins April 14th in Seattle. "This will be our first headline run for this tour. We've been going pretty non-stop since before 'Diamond Eyes' came out, and we've been having a blast," Moreno told Noisecreep. "We just got back from Southeast Asia, which we'd never been to. That was really exciting. Then, we had a little tiny break before we headed to South America and Mexico for a couple weeks, and we go straight from that into the U.S. tour. We're all getting along better than ever, and things are going great."
For those who remember Massachusetts rockers Staind as the band signed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, the thought of frontman Aaron Lewis putting out a country music EP might seem a bit strange. However, if you consider the string of hit singer-songwriter style ballads that Lewis wrote for the band between 1999 and 2005, an EP of country songs is not much of a stretch.

"I've written songs like 'Outside,' 'It's Been A While,' 'So Far Away,' and 'Everything Changes,'" Lewis recently told Noisecreep. "The only difference between those singer-songwriter songs and the ones on [my solo EP] 'Town Line' is that I took these new songs to Nashville and those other songs stayed right in [Staind]. But I don't think I'm reinventing the wheel or going outside of myself to do this [country record]."

Atlanta metal titans Mastodon have always approached their music visually and thematically, whether they were revamping Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick' on their 2004 album 'Leviathan,' chronicling a deadly expedition up a steep slope inhabited by horrible monsters on 'Blood Mountain,' or unraveling a phantasmagoric tale about astral projection, wormholes, Rasputin, and other unearthly delights on their latest album, 'Crack the Skye.' It was only a matter of time before Mastodon captured their imagery-filled songs on a visually rich concert DVD that offers more than just a standard live performance.

'Mastodon: Live at the Aragon' (out March 15) captures the band's October 19, 2009 headlining performance at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago during a tour with Dethklok, Converge, and High on Fire. Shot with 10 cameras, the DVD footage features 'Crack the Skye' performed in its entirety along with songs from the band's back catalog and a cover of 'The Bit' by the Melvins. 'Mastodon: Live at the Aragon' also features a CD of the concert and a DVD of an original movie the band comissioned to accompany the 'Crack the Skye' album. Noisecreep is proud to premiere the band's mesmerising perfromance of 'Crack the Skye' taken from their upcoming live DVD.

Some of those tunes comprised the soundtrack of the duo's Feb. 17 New York fashion week runway show. 'Blue Trees' -- one of three newly-written songs on Kingdom Come's upcoming 11-track album, 'Rendered Waters' -- is a mid-paced, electrified rocker that balances a sturdy beat and a steady rhythm with hum-along guitar hooks and predictable, but satisfying vocals. Overall, the song comes across less like frontman Lenny Wolf's beloved Led Zeppelin and more like a cross between the Scorpions and Oasis.

"It's a more lighthearted, straight-ahead love song with open chords hammering a simple theme, giving the bass and guitar players a good reason to stand spread-legged on stage rocking the house," Wolf tells Noisecreep of the song, which we are pleased to premiere.

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine was clearly hoping his band's ninth Grammy nomination since 1990 -- for the song 'Sudden Death' -- would finally net him a guilded gramophone statuette. The brainchild of Brutal Truth drummer Richard Hoak, Total F---ing Destruction are an experimental grindcore quartet that value speed, insanity, brutality and humor in equal doses. To demonstrate their bizarre brilliance, Noisecreep is thrilled to present the exclusive stream of 'Dudehammer' from the band's third album, 'Hater,' which comes out Feb. 15.

One of the few songs on the record that's over a minute long (there are 27 cuts in total), 'Dudehammer' is Total F---ing Destruction in a nutshell -- crash-and-burn ferocity with a smile. Blast beats and blowtorch guitars dominate almost every song, though there are touches of punk, jazz, blues and textural post-rock to enhance the flavor of the napalm.

After releasing numerous strong but traditional performance clips over the past seven years, As I Lay Dying wanted to shatter all preconceptions for their 10th music video, 'Anodyne Sea.' So they reached out to Boston-based directors Ian McFarland and Mike Pecci to create a violent, jarring and unsettling piece that takes no prisoners.

Actually, the video is all about being taken prisoner. In the clip, the band says something during a radio interview that invokes the ire of someone listening. Within moments, the station is stormed by terrorists who capture and beat up As I Lay Dying, throwing the musicians in a van. Following a bumpy, terror-filled ride, the band members are violently attacked and thrown to the ground before the video's shocking conclusion.

A full 16 years have passed since the last proper Praxis album, 'Metatron,' was released -- at least according to the band's experimental funk/jazz-metal bassist Bill Laswell, a longtime fixture in the New York underground. Discographies on various websites note a 1998 album called 'Mold,' the EP '1984' and a couple of live records, but Laswell insists the band's new disc 'Profanation: Preparing for a Coming Darkness' marks the genuine return of Praxis as an adventurous unit featuring guitarist Buckethead (ex-Guns N' Roses), bassist Brain (Primus) and a revolving door of guest musicians.

"Praxis was never meant to be seen as a band," Laswell explained to Noisecreep. "It's a project, and projects come together a little differently. Projects don't grow up together or get tired of each other. They're always new, and they have moveable parts. In the case of this record, we did it in our own studio and through the mail sending CDs back and forth, and if we did it today, we'd probably just do it over email."

Northern Irish Celtic-themed metal band Darkest Era will release their full-length debut, 'The Last Caress of Light,' on Feb. 15. The group tracked the disc with producer Chris Fielding at Foel Studios in Wales. To promote the upcoming release, Darkest Era shot the clip about the making of 'The Last Caress of Light,' which we're premiereing on Noisecreep.

The follow-up to the 2010's 'The Oaks Session' EP, 'The Last Caress of Light' is an epic, powerful and evocative album that explores universal themes of struggle and conflict. The title comes not from Metallica's cover of the Misfits' 'The Last Caress,' but from the closing cut of the record, 'The Last Caress of Light Before the Dark.'

Progressive, experimental Londoners TesseracT are part mechanical, part organic and soaringly melodic -- not to mention completely challenging to pin down. To see what we mean, you only need to watch 'Concealing Fate Part III,' which Noisecreep is proud to premiere. It's the first video from the band's new album, 'One,' which comes out March 22.

The song was tracked completely live in the studio with no edits or overdubs. Even the solos were recorded on the fly. To reflect the sort of spontaneity that drives the song, the band wanted a simple but exciting video that captured the moment rather than something that was shot over many hours, using multiple locations and post-production special effects.

"We had done a video for 'Concealing Fate Part II' already, which was more or less a traditional performance video," vocalist Dan Tompkins (ex-First Signs of Frost) told Noisecreep. "This time we really wanted a video that was more of a reflection of what we're like onstage."

The uninitiated might perceive Hate as some sort of death metal explosion coming out of Poland that includes Behemoth, Vader and Decapitated, but such an assertion is shortsighted. Poland has had strong death metal bands for decades, and even Hate have been around since 1990. Other Polish bands laying waste to their homeland include Sceptic, Dies Irae, Trauma, Lost Soul, Bestiar and Masicihist. So instead of considering Hate part of some movement, think of them as their own entity with a vision shared by thousands, domestic and international.

With that notion of Hate as a solitary machine, Noisecreep is thrilled to premiere the title track from the band's seventh full-length album, 'Erebos,' a feast of demolition driven by double-bass rolls, militaristic riffs and disarming guitar melodies.

Portland psychedelic stoner metal band Danava were so excited about 'The Illusion Crawls' -- a song they wrote for the follow-up to their 2008 disc 'UnonoU' -- that they wanted to put it out on a split-release with Earthless and Lecherous Gaze.

From the bluesy spider web guitar intro to the furious main riff that tumbles like clothes in a dryer, 'Illusion Crawls' exhibits all of Danava's strengths -- Ozzy-inspired vocals, a post-Black Sabbath doom spirit bred from the musty bowels of Trouble/St. Vitus and a dizzying, apocalyptic sense of dread.

The official Metallica biography may still be a while off (if it ever happens at all), but one of the most comprehensive, controversial and thought-provoking books about the band, Mick Wall's 'Metallica: Enter Night,' will come out in North America in May.

The book begins with the horrific 1986 bus accident in Sweden that took the life of bassist Cliff Burton -- the great test of Metallica's fortitude and, possibly, the catalyst that guided the course of their career for many years to come. From there, Wall -- a prolific author whose last book was the Led Zeppelin biography 'When Giants Walked the Earth' -- pulls from past and present interviews with Metallica, other musicians, producers and various insiders to tell the story of the band's greatest triumphs, worst tragedies and occasional failures.

One of the first bands to combine hardcore and metal rhythms with hip-hip vocals, Biohazard emerged in 1987 and soon evolved into the most versatile band in the genre. It wasn't long before Biohazard was also one of the most popular acts on the scene.

The band continued unabated until original guitarist Bobby Hambel left in 1995 because he was unable to stop drinking. The group continued with various guitarists until their eighth album 2005's 'Means to an End,' then splintered. Vocalist and bassist Evan Seinfeld pursued a life in adult films with his porn star ex-wife Tera Patrick and drummer Danny Schuler formed the group Bloodclot with Cro-Mags vocalist Jon Joseph.

In the early '90s, as alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden took over the cultural zeitgest with abrasive force, an even more contentious counter-culture of metallic noise bands emerged that were less melodic and more confrontational, including Jesus Lizard, God Bullies, Unsane and Surgury. Winnipeg, Manitoba trio KEN Mode suck up the skewed energy of that subculture and regurgitate it for the modern era.

In 2008, the ex-Guns N' Roses/Stone Temple Pilots spin-off band Velvet Revolver spun out of control when vocalist Scott Weiland left the group after just two albums. Considering more than two years have passed and not much seems to have happened in that time, drummer Matt Sorum is in pretty good spirits. He wasn't even troubled when guitarist Slash skipped off to do a solo album and tour before a replacement for Weiland could be found. Instead of moping or griping, Sorum has been getting down to business, putting the pieces in place for Velvet Revolver Mach II.

Velvet Revolver have already auditioned several singers and are close to announcing Weiland's replacement, according to Sorum. Once that happens, they'll hit the studio to work on the follow-up to 2007's 'Libertad.' But before then, he and his bandmates want to remind fans about the recently-released DVD 'Velvet Revolver Live in Houston,' which captures a show from 2005 when VR were new and had something to prove.
