For over a decade, Emery have straddled the worlds of aggressive rock and post hardcore, mixing reckless riffs with melodic pop hooks. When the South Carolina outfit saw their screamer Devin Shelton leave the band for the stability of family life, it seemed like the band was going to have to step away from the heavier aspects of their sound. However, Emery didn't merely prove everyone wrong by turning it up a few notches; 'We Do What We Want' is by far the band's heaviest record yet.

"I don't think we ever thought we'd get as heavy as we are now, but I'm glad we have," frontman Toby Morrell recently told Noisecreep. "We thought it would be fun to try."

Shelton left just as the band was in the middle of writing an acoustic album -- a release the band still hopes to finish and release before the end of the year. Upon learning the news of Shelton's departure, the stripped down sound was put on hold as Emery began to see just how far into the realms of hardcore they could go without giving up melodies and hooks.

2008's 'Twilight of the Thunder God' catapulted Swedish death metallers Amon Amarth to new heights -- sold-out shows, new countries, and their biggest sales in the US. In a recent chat with Noisecreep, guitarist Johan Söderberg admitted that expectations were quite high when it was time to begin work on their eighth album, 'Surtur Rising,' which caused some stress when writing.

"I felt big pressure when we started to write the songs," said Söderberg. "['Surtur Rising'] had to top the last album, which [was] hard because the last album [was] so good." With the new album, the band has branched into newer territories, letting melody go toe-to-toe with the ferocious battle cry of frontman Johan Hegg. The result may be Amon Amarth's heaviest album to date.

Shawn 'Clown' Crahan has never been a man known to rest, literally. A chronic insomniac since childhood, the Slipknot percussionist seems to always have extra time to work on his paintings, photography, and other musical projects including The Black Dots of Death.

When Noisecreep recently caught up with Crahan, he explained that death itself was the main inspiration behind The Black Dots of Death recordings. "I've been obsessed with death since I was a little kid," Crahan said. "I don't really know why that's been a thing with me, but [death] just seems like an absolute. I felt maybe since it's an absolute, then maybe it's something I should be check into."
After four years out of the metal game, Philadelphia's A Life Once Lost are noticing that things have changed in their absence. Namely, record and ticket sales. "We're not in the same position [now] as when we put out 'Hunter.' The metal scene was a lot different. Right now, the metal scene isn't as strong as it was then," frontman Robert Meadows told Noisecreep. "We're not going to be putting all our eggs in one basket with the touring we're going to be doing."

With a new album to be released on French label Season of Mist, the quintet's plan is simple: don't overdo it in the US and burn fans out. "I think [touring too much] is over-saturation. It's not going to give you anything back in return."

Relentless, raw, and vicious are all fitting ways of describing Los Angeles foursome OFF!. "When [people] point their finger at us or try to describe us, they don't get very creative. It's always 'punk rock.' Oh boy, that's exciting," frontman Keith Morris recently told Noisecreep.
Though it's best not to glue a genre tag on the group just because of its members' legendary resumes, defining OFF! as punk rock and hardcore is understandable. When most metal bands include strings in their sound, they simply fill up some open space not already cluttered with guitars. But in the ouvre of San Francisco trio Grayceon, classical instruments play a role all their own.

"I was always a metal fan. But because my parents were both classical musicians and gave me the proper training in classical music, I kind of didn't make a connection that I could do both in one thing," frontwoman and electric cellist Jackie Perez Gratz recently told Noisecreep.

One of the albums guaranteed to truly rip your face off this year is 'Darker Handcraft' from Trap Them. Noisecreep is beyond proud to give our readers first listen to the album's neck-slicing opener 'Damage Prose'. Vocalist Ryan McKenney explains that 'Damage Prose' was the first song guitarist Brian Izzi and drummer Chris Maggio sent his way to begin the lyric writing process.

"It took me a few listens to grasp it, but my immediate thoughts revolved around hearing the progression in our songwriting. I could recognize areas where I'd have breathing room, vocally. It just sounded huge and intense, and was a perfect way to set the tone as far as what I was able to expect," McKenney told Noisecreep. "I couldn't have asked for more. Brian and Chris worked their asses off on this record, and it's evident."

For five years straight, A Life Once Lost were moving as an integral cog in the metal machine, touring 10 months out of the year and only taking breaks to write and record new albums. But after guitarist Doug Sabolick suffered through a bike accident, being hit by a car, the band was forced to slow down. And even after their axeman recovered, the tech-metal outfit decided to embrace the time off -- purging their sound and reexamining how the band works.

"Taking that time away from the band and just allowing everyone to retouch with their families and such made us all grow up, and take that step back look at this band from an outsiders point of view," frontman Robert Meadows told Noisecreep.

Some record labels have a sound they're known for, with each band holding to a particular aesthetic. But for Florida's Decoder, they're the black sheep of the Rise Records family (home the glitzy metalcore of Attack Attack! and the like). Decoder rest their musical laurels in melody and lush soundscapes that put the band closer to the Deftones than a modern hardcore band. "Off the bat, we we're trying to distance ourselves from the [label's] roster," guitarist Jack Burns told Noisecreep.

But by mixing screams and singing, the band still ends up getting the hardcore tag, even though one of the post-heavy references would be more fitting for the quintet. "You get stuck in the basic idea of a heavy band, because you have screaming, but we're really not that heavy when it comes musically," said Burns. "The screaming has more emotion than heaviness."

Since first word spread of the San Francisco trio Grayceon, they have existed as an anomaly in the metal scene. Fronted by electric cellist Jackie Perez Gratz and joined by guitarist Max Doyle -- who opts to not use a pic when playing -- and drummer Zack Farwell the trio's luscious yet dark musical landscape quickly put the band on many radars.

Their newest album, 'All We Destroy,' keeps the mind focused on violence. The haunting lament of Gratz on the album's opening track, "I don't understand how you left me holding a bloody knife" is a seducing introduction to an album that punishes as much as it heals. With acts of malice and the like staying at the forefront for the album, Noisecreep asked the frontwoman if this was another theme record like the previous 'The Grand Scheme.'

The band soon became purveyors of sludge that collided with head-spinning mathematical structures. But the band's forthcoming album, 'Sedentary,' not only scales the sound down to a raw form -- giving up length for quick bangers -- but the task of traveling over 700 miles to Atlanta to write with drummer Mike Duffy proved to define the album.

"I think the record being so straightforward is a product of the situation we're in where we can't practice that often," guitarist Scott Shellhamer told Noisecreep. Spending a week in the South, the trio would "drink on a boat and light fireworks, and then try and write some s--- while we're there."

It's been nearly two years since 3 Inches of Blood graced us with a new album of pure metal terror. Though plans are still just that for a long player from the Canadian outfit, three songs were just recorded to give fans something to gnaw on until the blessed and leather-spiked release day.

When Noisecreep caught up with frontman Cam Pipes, the band was en route to a show. "We we're just reflecting on what kind of vibe these two songs have," Pipes admitted, with cell reception fleeting in the Idaho fields. "It maintains some kind of feel that we had going on the last record."

We've all had our share of triumphs and failures when it comes to Valentine's Day, and Sick Puppies drummer Mark Goodwin was kind enough to share with Noisecreep his greatest hits and misses.

"Best Valentine moment I guess would have to be my senior year of high school," Goodwin recalled. "I had quite a big crush on a popular girl in one of my classes. It was hard, but I finally got enough courage to ask her out for a date on Valentiness Day, it went great and I ended up dating her for a little while!"

Michigan's As They Sleep held back no death metal punches when it came to their sophomore album and Solid State debut, 'Dynasty.' The album itself is built around stories of kingdoms' rises to power and their prideful falls. 'Oracle of the Dead' itself is a commanding blast against "the human race," as frontman Aaron Bridgewater told Noisecreep. But for the video, the band scraped following the song's meaning to go off the ropes and onto the mat with director Drew Russ' wrestling idea.

"[The video] definitely captures the feeling, but I wouldn't go as far as to say the meaning," Bridgewater explained. "The song definitely is not about wrestling. It was a zany idea that the director had, but we were all down with it. We just wanted to do something weird and off topic. Mission accomplished."

The Famine's unhinged death metal ensures the band will never have a video based around happy thoughts and symbols of wishful thinking. Despite the band's openly religious bent, the Texas metallers stick to an apocalyptic and chaotic focus. Prepare yourself for the 'Ad Mortem' video.

"The video was shot in my dad's steel fabrication shop after a few days out on the road with Living Sacrifice and Becoming the Archetype," frontman Nick Nowell said, filling Noisecreep in on the clip's origins. "We drove through the night from Little Rock to Dallas in order to shoot this thing, so we were all sleep deprived."

Chicago's Fashion Bomb stand in their own world. Sure it's easy to lump them in the pile of industrial comparisons to Marilyn Manson and early Nine Inch Nails, but they go their own direction with disdaining riffs and an ever-evolving sound. Currently the band is out on the road opening for the purveyors of Latin-flavored metal Ill Niño. With such a distinctly different audience, Noisecreep caught up with the band to find out how the shows are going.

"Ill Nino's fans always count on them to bring an unforgettable performance, and we always strive to do that as well," frontman Adrian Valerie said. "Their fans usually don't know us, but they know good music. Even though we have our differences, it's still metal ... and their fans have been very kind to us and have been very supportive"

It's only been a short trip thus far for New Jersey's Old Wounds -- with only a handful of releases out -- but the foursome have proselytized their own scaring of dissonant riffs and harrowing anger that bleeds from the thrones of Converge and Cursed. Their newest offering, 'Sleeper,' puts the band in a select category when you look over the audio landscape of hardcore's underground.

"Even though I just joined the band not to long ago, it wasn't difficult for me to come to the conclusion that this band wasn't out there to solely make songs for a huge fan base, but to play the type of music they wanted to hear," bassist Mike Mazza told Noisecreep. "Quickly I caught on and started to appreciate the 'outside of the box' style of music we made. Originality is definitely key."

There's always been stark, contrasting ideas present in the music of Earth, from something as minuscule as song titles to the now-released full-length 'Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1.'

"I always have my ear out for those type of oppositional things," guitarist Dylan Carlson told Noisecreep when asked about where the delightfully-conflicting title came from. He credited bassist Karl Blau for the album's namesake. "I told him I was going to steal it," he laughed.
