While performing "Fade to Black" in Montreal on August 8, 1992, Hetfield was the victim of a pyrotechnic explosion that left him with severe second and third degree burns on his left side, including his hand, arm, eyebrows, face and hair. Despite the injuries, Hetfield was back on stage 17 days later, though without his guitar. He later got a tattoo to commemorate the experience.
