After performing at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, Hinds sustained a severe head injury after hitting his head on the concrete floor. The story behind the altercation has changed throughout the years, but everyone involved agrees that the guitarist's drunk actions inadvertently caused the brutal injury. Hinds spent some time recovering in the hospital and then rejoined Mastodon in time to record their next album, 2009's breakthrough Crack the Skye.
