Raised in the Lutheran Church, Ellefson strayed from religion for most of his life until he conquered his drug problems in 1990. "Some people in the church may see an issue with me playing mainstream music but this is the life I was given and my musical talents are also a gift from God,” Ellefson told Christian Post in a February 2012 interview. The bassist is studying for his Lutheran ordination at the Concordia Seminary in Clayton, Missouri.
