Lit Drummer Allen Shellenberger Succumbs to Brain Tumor at 39

According to Fullerton, Calif. punk rock outfit Lit's MySpace page, the band's drummer, Allen Shellenberger, has died. Surrounded by his family, close friends and bandmates, Shellenberger, who was 39, lost his heroic battle with brain cancer on Aug. 13.

Shellenberger was first diagnosed with a malignant glioma brain tumor back in the spring of 2008 and immediately underwent clinical trials, chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute in Los Angeles.

"To know Al was to know laughter," the band said in a statement. "He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Words cannot begin to express how much he will be missed. This was our brother and not a day will go by that we won't think about him. Right now we're trying to find the balance of mourning his loss and celebrating his life. Allen has experienced more in his 39 years than most people dream of in ten lifetimes. This is a tremendous loss for us, our fans, and also for Allen's family who took such good care of him during his battle with cancer."

Allen is survived by his daughter, Giovanna Mackey, his mother Connie James, and his father, Paul Shellenberger. Funeral services will be private for family members only, and a memorial event is being planned for a future date.

Of course, Lit first rose to fame during the 1990s, with a string of rock radio-embraced hits like 'My Own Worst Enemy,' 'Miserable,' 'Addicted' and 'Times Like This.' In 1999, the band joined RCA's roster, releasing 'A Place in the Sun.' During the course of the their career, they've played high profile gigs, including a Warped Tour run, the 1999 rendition of Woodstock and jaunts with the likes of the Offspring, Garbage and No Doubt.

The band parted ways with RCA in 2002, and released several independent LPs, including 2004's eponymous album, which peaked at #113 on the Billboard Top 200 and #6 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Soon after Shellenberger was diagnosed, the band organized a benefit for Allen at House Of Blues in Anaheim, Calif., which featured performances from Sugar Ray and Handsome Devil. No Doubt drummer Adrian Young filled in for Shellenberger on the drums for a few songs during Lit's set.

Ignore the Negative comments, by responding or even acknowledging the ignorance, your just lowering yourself to there stupidity. These are the ones who want attention, "shit stirers" ..... If you ignore them, they get bored and go away!

May Allen rest in peace and may God watch over his family friends at this time... I feel for them! My father died of a brain tumour 8 years ago.. it was the longest and most agonizing 4 months i ever expierienced. I pray to God no one will ever have to endure the pain and loss of a loved one from this. Hopefully one day there will be a cure !!! nuff said.... peace all ... ~Z~

God rest his soul. Brain cancer can be cured. To learn the details about a simple and effective natural cancer therapy, which crosses the blood brain barrier, has a chemical structure which prevents cancer cells from developing a resistance to its action, and reportedly has yielded often impressive results in treating a variety of cancers, including leukemia, breast, colon, prostate, brain cancer (including left frontal glioblastoma), and more, and which according to one M.D. with an international reputation has "stabilized, improved, or remitted" every cancer patient he has followed, with the exception of patients very near death, go to: http://forums.healthiertalk.com/viewforum.php?f=13 and click on page 3. Then scroll down to the thread entitled, "Artemisinin - a Simple and Effective Natural Cancer Therapy" by Beach Man and read the entire thread, including the info/articles/case history summaries at the provided Links. The posts/replies by Beach Man are written in concise and clear user friendly language to enable anyone to get started right away if necessary, and include a medically documented explanation of how it works, how to use it, where to obtain the recommended fully potent brands at the best price, etc. Information is also provided about how to locate an integrative physician experienced in such therapy. Some also use it periodically as a preventive. However, the guidance of a knowledgeable physician or one experienced in its use is recommended.

For those who would like to learn about it but who are reluctant to utilize the Link information I provided due to fear of SPAM, here is an alternate way to access most of the information. Type the following into your SEARCH box and "Google" it - Robert Jay Rowen, M.D. AND Artemisinin - Type it exactly as I did with the "AND" in all capital (upper case) letters. Then read the hits which contain Dr. Rowen's name. Be sure to read the one at townsendletter.com - The Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients.

Wow! 1. I have enjoyed Lit on tour and over the airwaves for a long time. Their songs bring back memories! :) I don't know Allen personally, but he has added something to a lot of people's lives and I thank him for that. 2. My brother is also battling brain cancer. He was diagnosed at 32 years old and has three little kids! He's a two year survivor... but has another brain scan in just a couple of weeks. Once your life has been touched by brain cancer, you become a changed person. You begin to realize how very short and fragile life is. You stop taking every moment and every breath for granted. I CARE! My heart goes out to his family, who must be devastated!!! You heartless asshole! If nothing else, lower your worthless eyeballs and send some positive vibe to his little girl... who now has to experience the rest of her life without her dad because of the brutal reality that is brain cancer. Either express love or shut your fucking mouth! You're a waste of oxygen and too bad it wasn't you instead. All lives have value... until they become the cancer of humanity through spreading hate and spewing stupidity like you have.

anyone that ignorant to make such a comment, is obviously just a drummer who didn't make it. it's called jealousy...how wonderful that you're still in your bedroom playing to cds (of which lit is probably one of them), and not out there living the dream, as allen did.

god bless you allen.

Jess everybody, lighten up, wouldja? I never said or meant I was glad he died, yes it was tragic and sorrowful, his loss of life at that young age. What I said and meant was that he was an unknown but aspiring yutz no different from all the rest of us. When I posted "who cares?" was in response to the fact I'd never even heard his name before, and that alone should show just how "famous" he was. I've been into the music scene since the early 50s, and I can recite almost name by name most of the musicians who passed away before their time. Again, who, besides his family and friends, will remember his name even a few short years from now? (except that small army of shit-music fans who seem to worship this obscure drummer and his band). Yeh, I'm saddened too he's dead, just like I feel sad for anyone whose name I dont know. If he were any good at his craft, or had any real talent, he'd be widely known by now, even famous. But such luck didnt come his way. R.I.P. to him, my condolences to his family. As for all you "I WANT MY MTV" generation, look outside your little plastic bubble once in a while and listen to REAL music, not just the shit that calls itself music these days! Enough already! I'm glad I pissed off so many, I've known for a long time there's a whole society of hate-mongers out there who'll shoot down anyone who disagrees with their silly-ass point of view and lack of taste! Signing off: Mr. been there, done that! I know whereof I speak!
