Korn Bassist Fieldy Reinvents Himself in Stillwell, Jonathan Davis Approves

Korn bassist Fieldy is reinventing the metal wheel with his side project, Stillwell, which he describes as sounding like a mix of Guns N' Roses, Rage Against the Machine and Led Zeppelin. "It's heavy, but not heavy like Korn. We came up with a title for the music; it's called street metal. It's our version of metal. I don't know, it's just not straightforward metal," Fieldy tells Noisecreep.
More surprisingly, though, Fieldy has reinvented himself in Stillwell and added the role of guitarist to his résumé. "I play more guitar than bass these days," he adds. "I wasn't even quite sure what I wanted to do when we started out. In the beginning, we were going to get a bunch of crazy guitar players together."
But as songs started to take shape, he found himself playing around with riffs and melodies on guitar. "I just started picking out on the guitar. Then it turned out I was playing guitar for like six hours a day, a lot of guitar. So I said, 'You know what, I'm going to be the guitar player.'"
The album, which is not so sweetly titled 'Surrounded by Liars' and numbers Wuv from P.O.D. on drums, has no release date yet. What with the new Korn album due anytime soon, the record is taking something of a backseat. Noisecreep wonders if all that guitar playing has affected his bass work on Korn's upcoming record, which is to be titled 'Korn III.' "Absolutely. Even coming from Jonathan," Fieldy exclaims, referring to Korn frontman Jonathan Davis. "He's all, 'Dude, since you've been playing all this guitar it's made you such a better bass player.' I'm pushing to play really good. Picking up the bass now, I can even tell. I'm so much better, but I have to remember to step back. Be like, bass."
