Against Me! Frontman Tom Gabel to Undergo Treatments to Become a Woman

His announcement makes him the first major rock star to come out as transgender. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," Gabel tells the magazine, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
Having struggled silently with gender dysphoria since his youth, Gabel, 31, will start his transformation by taking hormones and receiving electrolysis treatments. His wife Heather is standing by his side throughout the process. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding." The couple have a 2-year-old daughter together named Evelyn.
Gabel plans to change his name to Laura Jane Grace.
