Paul Stanley's Take on Musicians Who Talk Politics: They're 'Absurd'

"I don't know what's more embarrassing, these musicians and actors talking about politics in interviews or the media actually giving them credibility about it," KISS legend Paul Stanley tells Noisecreep during a recent chat. The singer/guitarist was on the line to discuss Monster, KISS' upcoming 20th studio album, when we asked him why he's always been so guarded about his political views in the press.

The subject came up because Gene Simmons (his KISS bandmate) has been very vocal as of late, when it comes to his Republican views. "It's absurd that a celebrity could speak out on the economy or politics with no more justification than a hit album or a movie. Not to deride Gene, but I just think he's part of a symptom of absurdity where you'll see somebody on television whose only criteria for being there is success in a field far away from what they're being asked about. I really don't know who is more ridiculous, the celebrity answering these political questions or the person asking them," said the 60-year-old New York native.

"I'm usually not at a loss for words, but this whole celebrity political thing always gets me," laughs the rocker. "It's so embarrassing to see people with absolutely no inside knowledge of anything they are talking about. I have friends who are intimately involved with world affairs and these are the people who won't give opinions like these celebrities do. For my friends, it's far more complex and sensitive than that, unlike these celebrities who read some newspaper story, or watch CNN, and then spout out some opinion on something they truly don't know anything about."

Stanley then remembered a story regarding a famously politically outspoken actor: "Years ago, Tim Robbins was on television getting some kind of award. He then starts saying something about how America should let all of the Haitian people with AIDS into the country. All I could think was, 'Fine, you should hire them to work in your house!' It was crazy [laughs]. Yeah, all this celebrity politics stuff, count me out."

Just because you keep saying that Karen doesn't make it true. Hollywood platform/endorsement was very important to this administrations campaign. They used it very effectively - I don't understand why you can't see that.

I agree with Paul.A celebrity may or may not know more than I do, but, being a celebrity is not equal to being more knowledgeable about politics at all..and like one perosn here said--like what happened with the Dixie Chicks, fans can dislike you and refuse to buy your music if you make your political views known and that fan doesn't agree!

Now, dhlehelena,I do agree with what you say about how we all have freedom of speech.Of course. But that isn't the point!
A reporter asking a celebrity what he or she thinks is foolish--*that* is the point!. And unfortunately, a lot of people *do* listen to what celebrities say, as if they're somehow more important--just like people see handsome or beautiful people as better or smarter, although most would deny it.
This nonsense you posted about this administration loving celebrity endorsement?Where did you get that from? I've never seen *any*. celebrity endorsements for either side..except just now with Gene Simmons knocking our current president.

Facta-the-matta is........we want celebrities we like, to "like" us too, so we feel bad when they speak against something we like and, or believe and people of weak minds or constitution will rail alongside their fave-o-rite ones......
I'm with the likes of Paul Stanley or better yet Tom Petty, when asked a political question replied...."why would anyone want to know what I think?.....I'm just a guitar player"
Amen brutha Tom.....Amen.

hes correct in many ways, you can still be well know and have a cause but just don't go over board, a lot of times famous people are baited into a situation, and they bite. look at ted n. he fell for the bait, look at the guy that open monday night football he fell for the bait, sometimes its just better to "know your roll and shut your damn mouth!

Well ole Jean is a jew... and a fairly well grounded one at that .... got to admit his wife shanon has a lot more savy then he does...Dresses better too!!! I can appreciate that he has conservative views... But like Clint , John, and maybe one or two more celebrities; that are capable thinkers in hollywood.. There are very few who who have the balls to stand behind the truth or even the brains to articulate it in either the hollywood crowd or our commical communist news media. They seem to think that it is ok to have treasonous lier and cheat in power whose only celebrity ambition is to spend lots of the tax payer's money on campaining, sports junkits, and the Snakes entertainment and fashon appatite,,,,

OK Paul, that means nobody can voice any opinion? What if you read newspapers, get informed about a subject...I think everybody has the right to say their opinon, only people who don't like it, they say, oh you have no clue about the subject.
I personally don't care what Gene Simmons or the other guys say, their political view, but I am happy that somebody takes a stand, say what they think. That is our right.
Paul, you say what you think, and that is good.
If we can't do that anymore (and I don't care if you are in the public eye or like us, simple plumbers) than we life in a dictatorship or other repressive regime.
Why do yo judge celeberties different from yourself?
Because they might have more impact on voters? That makes the voters look mighty dumb, if they vote like their favorite celeberty votes.

But people *do* listen to celebrities-- they may not consciously base their decisions on what a singer or actor says.., but they *do* think what a celebrity says is more important than what you or I say!
You're incorrect though, that people only say"Oh you don't know what you're talking about" when they don't like the point of what was said.
I might be interested to know what a celebrity I like thinks, but, if he or she comes on strong about something, I *do* think in the back of my mind.."what does he(or she) really *know* about it?"

Do you remember the Dixie Chicks – If you’re in the Entertainment Business it is best to keep your political views to yourself. If you want to play politics then you got to take the hits because many times you have audience members on both sides of the political spectrum and all points in between.
